
Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Olayemi Oyebanji, on Tuesday, stated that early detection remains the most effective way to reducing breast cancer deaths among Nigerian women.
Speaking at the 2025 Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness, organised by Funmi Adunni Olayinka Diagnostic Wellness Centre at EKSUTH in conjunction with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, she urged women in the state to take responsibility of their health.
The First Lady reiterated the commitment of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration in providing accessible and quality healthcare services that address the needs of Ekiti people.
Flagging off the event themed: “No One Should Fight Cancer Alone,” the governor’s wife called on residents of the state to support patients navigating the challenges of treatment and recovery adding that emotional and psychological support during post-treatment care will help survivors regain confidence and adjust to life after treatment.
Her words: “The theme for this year reminds us that together, we can save life’s through support, knowledge and early detection. Our mission is to ensure every woman has timely access to breast and cervical cancer screening. This is why we are sponsoring free mammogram and cervical screening to our women. Access to screening should never be a barrier to our women.
“I want to give a massive thank you to the credible team at Funmi Adunni Olayinka Diagnostic Wellness Centre. Your commitment continue to bring hope to every family and the state at large.
“I wish to acknowledge our governor whose support made it possible for the centre to acquire the mammogram system, the specialized equipment used for high quality breast cancer screening. His dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure in the state is commendable.
“Let us own our health. Our health is priceless. Let us do our checkup. Early detection is the powerful step to protect yourselves and family. Together, we will continue to build a stronger Ekiti where no woman facts cancer alone.”
The First Lady seized the opportunity to offset the bills for mammogram test for 200 women, pap smear test for 100 women and surgeries for some cancer patients.
Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of EKSUTH, Kayode Olabanji commended the efforts of the governor in improving the health sector in the state noting that the wellness centre will promote healthy lifestyle towards reducing illnesses, mobility and mortality.
On her part, Matron of the Centre, Martins Adetoye revealed that the state governor had donated N10m to the Centre and appreciated the governor for being supportive to the treatment of cancer patients.
Other highlights of the event include; lectures on breast and cervical cancer by experts, unveiling of medical equipments by the Ekiti State First Lady and Survivors’ account.
