…as Oyebanji’s holistic approach to waste management earns him “double-double Governor” nickname
Ekiti State government has engaged the services of local artisans and welders to fabricate 60 dino bins for effective waste management in the state.
While 40 have already been strategically deployed across Ado-Ekiti, another 20 freshly fabricated ones are ready for distribution across more communities.
The administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s approach to waste management has been nothing short of holistic in the state.
Since assuming office, every request presented by the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority has been considered and approved, from the repair of 8 grounded vehicles, to the purchase of 3 new trucks, to the recent procurement of 4 additional Sino trucks that will soon be joined by 4 more currently being delivered.
The Governor also approved the recruitment of over 80 environmental officers and doubled the salaries of more than 600 street sweepers, a gesture that earned him the nickname “Double-Double Governor.”
Plans are already underway to raise these wages again, in recognition of their hard work keeping Ekiti’s streets clean.
The Dino bins project is complemented by the licensing of 12 private waste operators, strategically assigned to zones for doorstep collection.
This move has drastically reduced indiscriminate dumping on road medians and drains, while ensuring prompt evacuation and fumigation routines to prevent health risks.
Beyond infrastructure, the State is investing in knowledge. EKSWAMA staff have at different times undergone hands-on training with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), gaining modern techniques to strengthen waste management in Ekiti.
This isn’t just about bins, trucks, or salaries; it’s about building an efficient, sustainable waste management structure that combines local content, job creation, environmental safety, and citizen wellbeing.
